Also spend a long time adjusting verb parameters. I often EQ out the sound as best I can but at the expense of a natural sound. Now its very subtle and I'm sure some would say they don't hear it at all but I'm sure its there. No matter what drum loop I seem to run through them I always seem to pick out a metallic ringing. But anyway Waves True verb and Perfect space are the best digital Verbs I have heard (with a possible exception for UAD but I only had it for a few days). Increase the predelay if the reverb is masking transients.Īnd finally, the most oft-quoted rule for reverb: if you can hear it distinctly in the mix, you're using too much of it. Use a chorus after the reverb to mix up its spectral emphasis. Place a compressor before the reverb if it's too strong on the peaks. EQ the reverb, taking some highs off to simulate the natural high-frequency attenuation of real-space reflections, and taking out some lows below 500Hz to prevent muddiness. Use reverb on a bus rather than as an insert effect so you can manipulate it independently of the dry signal. Rule #1 is don't use too much of it! On drums in particular, make sure the reverb tails are shorter than the space between hits so they don't walk over the next hit. There are a number of techniques you can use to mellow out reverb and make it less obtrusive. Remember that reverb is only manipulating what's already in there. A thin vocal will still be thin, and a poorly-miked acoustic guitar will still sound like mud. If a snare has a prominent ring to it, that will get exaggerated by reverb. Part of it depends on the source material. It is also easy to get nasty, unpleasant sounds, even from the better reverbs. It is entirely possible to get very pleasant reverb from digital plugins. But it's not because they're software-based effects specifically. Sometimes they do suffer from a metallic or hollow sound. Is it me or do s/w Reverbs sound metallic?
